DESCRIPTION

The Belum Rainforest Resort is set in the tropical paradise of the Belum-Temengor rainforest on Pulau Banding Island, which is located midway between the east and west coasts of Malaysia. Connected to and by the East-West-Highway are the closest towns to Belum: Jeli (Kelantan) and Gerik (Perak). Pulau Banding is a five hour drive from Kuala Lumpur. Situated in the state of Perak, at the border of Malaysia and Thailand, the stunning landscape of the Rainforest houses over 3,000 species of flowering plants. The entire forest complex is approximately four times the size of Singapore, making it the perfect habitat for 14 of the world’s most threatened mammals, including the Malaysian Tiger, Malaysian Sunbear, Sumatran Rhinoceros and others. It also makes this forest an ideal destination for ecotourism activities, such as wildlife watching, education and research initiatives, which support the conservation efforts of the area.

The Story of Belum Rainforest Resort

On 9 July, 2008 the Belum Rainforest Resort was established as one of Malaysia’s premier ecotourism holiday destinations by His Majesty The Sultan of Perak. Situated at the heart of the tropical paradise of Pulau Banding Island, the resort provides the opportunity to experience living within nature. Belum-Temengor Rainforest is where the wonders of nature come alive. Over 130 million years of age and encompassing 300,000 hectares, this tropical paradise is home to a vast number of species of animals and plants, many of which cannot be found anywhere else in the world. In fact, scientific studies indicate that this pristine forest, which remains one of the largest untouched forest reserves in Peninsular Malaysia, holds enormous potential for the discovery of more biological treasures. This makes Belum Rainforest Resort an enchanting paradise for nature lovers and travelers.

Green Initiatives

Belum Rainforest Resort is the first eco destination in Malaysia.

Philosophy

Belum Rainforest Resort was built having sustainability and the development of eco-friendly vacation in mind.

Architecture

Belum Rainforest Resort, located in the Belum Temenggor Rainforest in north Perak, Malaysia, was a designed resthouse which was redeveloped using sustainable materials, including bamboos for ventilated safari roofs, rammed earth as walls, timber, tree saplings as facade screen, and recycled demolition debris for decorative wall claddings. The protection of the ecosystem and usage of sustainable building benefits the environment and nature, as well as the economy and community. The development of the resort was planned around existing buildings with minimal land clearing.
Use of "huruhara" brick walls constructed out of recycled bricks salvaged from existing buildings.
Use of "sapling" screens harvested from fast growing sustainable somah wood for ventilation.

Energy Consumption

Natural ventilation in the rooms
Natural daylight encouraged by using sapling screens and open corridors
Earth wall made from soil at the Restauarnt Sidai. The wall has high thermal mass, where heat is absorbed during the day and released by night. This allows less air condition

Water Consumption

Swimming pool uses the backwash water system to recycle waste water for external use such as toilet flushing. Usually the wastewater generated from backwashing is discharged to the sewerage system in accordance with a trade waste agreement with the local sewerage authority.

Waste Management

Chandelier in the restaurant made from branches of fallen trees woven togethter. Used bottles utilised as light diffusers.
