History & Philosophy

The traditional house Josephus represents sustainable values at the South Tyrolean Schnalstal since 1912. At that time, Josef Spechtenhauser, owner of the „Örlhof“ in one of the best locations of the valley,  built the lodge with the name „Josef’s home“. Josef used to be a driver for guests to Kurzras, a popular destination for alpine tourism. Thus, Josef got the necessary financial means to build the house in best location. Architecturally oriented on Kurstadt Meran, the metropolis of art nouveau, Josephus was built in a countryside villa style, which was rather unusual at the time.

Doris and Alexander Rainer share the love for agriculture. In close proximity to Josephus, they sustainably cultivate the mountain farm „Brugg“ with old breeds such as the Schnals sheep and Tyrol Grey. Doris and Alexander have always been fascinated by the exceptional architecture and impressive position of the farm „Josephus“ in their neighborhood. When the farm was sold, they decided to elaborately and sensibly renovate the building, in order to realize a holiday residence according to the motto: „Doors open and in the middle of nature: meadows, stream and mountains.

Characterized by a century long family tradition at the Schnalstal valley, host family Rainer lives authenticity and values of environmental-compatibility and sustainability. It is their aim to maintaining the untouched nature of the region and give guests an understanding of the environment. At Josephus, tradition is combined with a healthy look into the future.
