General information on the Caribean
The Caribean is located in the Western part of the Atlantic Ocean. Including the islands, island groups and marine area of the Caribean Sea, it has a land surface of 220.000 km². The Caribean was named after the indigenous Caribs, who were found during the conquest of the Lesser Antilles by the Spanish.
Today, the tropical paradise is habitat of around 40 million people. Next to the Indigenous, Caribean inhabitants foremost originate from African, European, Creole, Indian or Chinese countries. The main languages are Spanish with 70% and English with 24%. Additionally, French, Dutch, Creole and Caribean are used in the daily life. With the tropic rainforest climate and average temperatures over 20 degrees, it is a popular destination for travellers.
What to experience in the Caribean
From airy heights to way below sea level, the Caribean has many natural spectacles to offer. The Pico Duarte, with 3098 meters the highest mountain of the Caribean region, or the Belize Barrier Reef, the second biggest reef system in the world, are always worth a visit. Also the paradisiacal surroundings of the ABC islands Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao welcome you for a visit.
