Kasbah du Toubkal Hotel – Lounge

History & Philosophy

Already in 1972, when trekking in the High Atlas Mountains, Mike McHugo fell in love with the magical Morocco. In 1989, he stayed with his mother and brother Chris in a small Berber village as the guests and friends of Hajj Maurice, a local mountain guide and respected leader of the local community. The village was located at the foot of a ruined kasbah that used to be the summer home of a local feudal chief. Chris suggested to buy the old kasbah to invest in Morocco’s development and work with the special site in a sustainable way.

After restoration, which was sympathetic to its original design, Kasbah du Toubkal opened its doors in 1995. Maurice and his wife, Hajja Arkia, manage the property. Just recently, a the first trekking lodge in the area was opened.

Rather a berber hospitality centre than a traditional hotel, Kasbah du Toubkal maintains a unique partnership with the local Berber community. Mike’s vision was to develop a small Berber hospitality Centre based on the principles of sustainability.

Social Projects

  • Set up Imlil Village Association: Funded by a 5% accommodation levy, the association supports local community projects. To maintain the close links with the local community, the levy is funneled back to the villagers; with the help of the association a school for 80 children in an outlying valley as well as the region’s first community hammam was constructed, it enabled a rubbish disposal system, and provides the region’s first ambulance and driver
  • Leader Founder of the project “Education for all“ – with the help of fundings from guests as well as international fundraising efforts, Kasbah du Toubkal provides disadvantaged girls the opportunity to complete school and go to university

Waste Management
