History and Philosophy

Originally under the name of lodge Santa Rosa, the 20th century hotel at the train station of Ollantaytambo opened in 1925. 40 decades ago, Wendy Weeks and her husband Robert Randall came to Peru and decided to make it their home. They re-opened the lodge as El Albergue and became part of the local community. The beautifully situated lodge with marvelous views and the aroma of indigenous flowers is an authentic place, taking good care of the environment and local community around it. Ollantaytambo has been agricultural area ever since the pre-Inca times. Still today, it provides the main source of income for large parts of the local population. Terraced fields, water canals and traditional granaries define the image of the landscape surrounding El Albergue. In 2011, the lodge started its own farming project to produce their own vegetables, corn, quinua and potatoes. The farm is tilled using traditional techniques, such as plowing with oxen, and no agrochemicals or synthetic fertilizers are used. At El Albergue Ollantaytambo, sustainability in terms of responsible resource use, maintaining traditions and cultural heritage, local support and social responsibility is an affair of the heart.
