The Story and Philosophy

The vision behind Sagna Rotonda was the wish of the host family to establish an eco-village in the Piedmont mountains.

Energy management

  • Use of a photovoltaic system producing 7 kW
  • It covers the total energy requirements of the structure. During closing time, the energy is fed into the pipeline of the local electric company.
  • Use of only led light  (outside night light is only 60 watt)
  • A single wood boiler produces hot water for the apartments

Waste and water management

  • The waste collection point is at 7 km distance and is transported twice a week from the hotel
  • Guests are asked to separate the waste
  • Water is sourced from a natural well 300 meters above the structure through a tube which had been installed by the hotel within the forest
  • The water is collected in a reserve tank of 6000 Lt.
  • Inside the bath the the hosts of Sauna Rotonda installed the jet for broken water to mixed with air

Architecture

  • For the renovation use of naturals materials only
  • Use of mostly “Larice” Larch and stone
  • Insulation with natural cork 12 cm, which was difficult to realize as more than 1000 sq. had to be covered
  • Inside, the wall is built with clay bricks, natural lime and water paint
  • The floor is made of larch wood
  • The renovation was done respecting the historical and typical style of the old mountain houses

Social engagement

  • The host’s philosophy is to create a location where families and friends can meet
  • Renovating the old hamlet, the hosts not only maintain the historic architecture but also revitalizes the local community and economy
  • Twice a week the hosts organize guided trekking tours to explore the environment of Valle Maira which is a complementary service
