Self-Sufficient and Authentic – The Philosophy of OLM Nature Escape

In South Tyrol’s Ahrntal Valley, in the place a small guesthouse once stood, a vision has become reality: the OLM Nature Escape, a retreat that brings architecture, nature, and people into harmony. Christian Lechner, the owner, has deep roots in the valley and began planning the OLM Nature Escape in 2007. His goal was clear from the beginning: to create a place that respects the cycle of nature and is part of it. In December 2023, the unique eco-aparthotel finally opened.

What Sustainable Measures does the Eco Aparthotel OLM Nature Escape Implement?

At OLM Nature Escape, architecture, nature, and sustainability converge to provide a harmonious experience. The circular building offers a unique sight but also provides stability and spaces that promote well-being. Sustainable, Creative, and Well-Thought-Out

The OLM Nature Escape was constructed in accordance with strict ecological and energy criteria, meeting the highest Casa Clima standards. Environmental compatibility, living comfort, and a sustainable energy supply were all equally important in the process.

  • Construction in full compliance with all rules established by the Casa Clima Agency
  • Certification by Casa Clima Nature, which considers not only energy efficiency, but also environmental impact (including water) and the health and well-being of the occupants
  • Objective assessment of the environmental compatibility of the materials and systems used in construction by Casa Clima Nature.
  • Definition and compliance with precise requirements for indoor air quality, natural lighting, acoustic comfort, and protection against radon gas
  • Ecological construction using natural materials, such as regionally typical larch wood and stone
  • Circular construction with a diameter of 110 meters that is aesthetically pleasing and creative, as well as more resistant to wind and earthquakes
  • Planning the building to achieve an independent and sustainable energy supply through renewable sources, such as photovoltaic systems, geothermal energy, and artesian wells.
  • Reduction of heating in the summer months through external shading, canopies, and orientation of the building

First Energy Self-Sufficient Hotel in South Tyrol

OLM Nature Escape relies on innovative, environmentally friendly technologies for its energy supply. Geothermal energy, photovoltaics, and an efficient construction method ensure minimal CO₂ emissions, maximum sustainability, and self-sufficiency.

  • Installation of 126 geothermal probes, each with an output of 36 watts, at a depth of 100 running meters on an adjacent 20,000 m² plot of land
  • Generation of most of the electricity needed to operate the heat pumps by a photovoltaic system
  • Overall high efficiency with emissions of only 30 kg CO₂/m²a for heating and cooling the entire facility

A Complete Cycle

The OLM Nature Escape concept emphasizes the responsible use of water. Natural sources, economical irrigation, and thoughtful recycling into the soil create a resource-conserving cycle.

  • Feeding the natural swimming pond from an artesian well (i.e., without submersible pumps or other mechanical aids)
  • Free water stations for guests
  • Most of the property is unsealed: only 5,650 m² of the total 19,100 m²
  • Drainage of rainwater from the sealed areas via infiltration basins and return to the ground
  • Irrigation of green areas via an artesian well

Plastic-Free and Refillable

Sustainability is not limited to the architecture – eco-friendly solutions and the responsible use of resources are also priorities in day-to-day operations.

  • Plastic-free, biodegradable amenities
  • Shower gel and soap from local producers in refillable rPET dispensers
  • Refillable canisters of cleaning products (supplier cleans and reuses canisters)
  • Waste compactor and a good recycling storage facility

Eco-Friendly and Locally Sourced

Every decision made by OLM Nature Escape, whether regarding origin or packaging, is guided by the principle of minimizing environmental and natural impact.

  • 80 % regional and/or organic products
  • Focus on avoiding plastic packaging
  • Preferential use of biodegradable alternatives

Honest and Approachable

At the heart of our social commitment lies a close connection to the region: through supporting social initiatives and respecting local resources.

  • Support for the Sägemüllerhof social project: purchase items from their sewing workshop and donation of EUR 1.00 per bottle of wine sold.
  • No adverse impact on the local population’s access to food, water, energy, healthcare, land, etc., as a result of the accommodation’s activities

For the Preservation of Biodiversity

Architecture merges with nature: biotopes and old fruit trees provide habitats for plants and animals.

  • Commitment to protecting biodiversity, flora, and fauna
  • Within the building grounds: Wild garden with biotope plants and old varieties of fruit trees, such as apple, pear, plum, and cherry

Sustainable Vacations for Everyone

Thanks to its well-designed access and barrier-free rooms, the hotel offers comfort to people with different needs.

  • Accessibility to accommodations for people with disabilities via ramps or elevators.
