Unlocking the secrets of the wildcats: Visit Bad Herrenalb and learn about Germany’s First Quality Trail „family-fun“, a wildcat forest-experience.
For many years we can observe that wildcats start to feel at home again in our woods recapturing their former territories. The animals are exceedingly shy, why the chances to meet them are extremely minimal.
Germany’s first Quality Trail „family-fun“ located in the upper Gaistal in Bad Herrenalb leads over hill and dale directly through the habitat of the wildcats. An excursion for the whole family hiking cross country over meadows and woods, crossing creeks and rivers.
At ten information points you stop by to learn more about the animals, their hunting behavior, their natural enemies, what prey they hunt and what differs them from a house-cat. Guided tours give more detailed information.

Background information Wildcat Trail
The Wildcat-Forest Experience is an initiative of BUND-Landesverband Baden-Württemberg e.V., promoted by the Nature Reserve Black Forest Middle/North and the municipality Bad Herrenalb as well as the Härtwig-Stiftung. The path originated in cooperation with the town Bad Herrenalb, the Landesbetrieb ForstBW and the municipality Loffenau, part of the BUND – campaign “Biotopvernetzung – Netze des Lebens“ which is financed with EU fundings from the finance program LIFE.
Hiking across the Teufelsmühle
The Black Forest around Bad Herrenalb is a paradise for all nature lovers and active vacationers: a multitude of hiking routes, geocaching and adventure trails can be discovered in the Nature Park.
A special trail is the “Große Runde über die Teufelsmühle” (English: Long hike across the Devil’s Mill), which was awarded as quality trail called “traumtour” (English: dream tour).
You overcome 800 height meters on the 15.5 km hike from Bad Herrenalb to the Teufelsmühle (Devil’s Mill) and back via the Obere Gaistal. During the trip you can explore highlights such as the 200-million-year-old, natural forest gorge “Großes Loch” (English: Great hole) with its “Teufelskammern” (Devil’s Chambers) made of gravel sandstone. Having reached the legendary Teufelsmühle (Devil’s Mill), you will enjoy an impressive 360° panoramic view over the Black Forest and gather new energy before you head back home.
Bad Herrenalb is certified as “Sustainable Destination”
The spa city Bad Herrenalb contributes actively to climate protection and the protection of its woods. The government Baden-Wurttemberg supports visitor-strong tourism destinations in their sustainable development providing a sustainable cheque.
The certification process encloses all three aspects of sustainability, economical, social and ecological, the aim is to be awarded the official seal “Sustainable destination”.
The touristic Bad Herrenalb (in house operation of Bad Herrenalb) as a destination management organization has submitted successfully to this certification: Since February, 2016 Bad Herrenalb is certified as „sustainable destination“.
Since 2012 Bad Herrenalb is awarded by the non-profit organization TransFair as “Fairtrade City.” The award repeats every two years and comprises five important criteria: The local council, some associations and parishes must offer fair trade products. In addition, supporting fair trade must be recorded in a council resolution.
Moreover, retail, restaurants, and hotels situated in the Fairtrade City must offer fair trade products on a permanent basis. Another important point is communicating and addressing the issue – within society as well as in schools and the local media.
A designated Fairtrade Group is responsible for the coordination of the activities on the subject in Bad Herrenalb, for example during the garden show in 2017.
Ecological responsibility: Active climate protection
For Bad Herrenalb active climate protection is an important subject. Together with external engineers a concept was developed which reduces the energy consumption of buildings and facilities:
Improvement of heat insulation in the Kurhaus Bad Herrenalb, cogeneration unit for the Siebenthäler Therme and a pellet heating at the city hall in Bernbach.
Other energetic measures are new windows for better heat insulation, implementation of low-energy lights and light bulb, optimization of heating and ventilation technology.
Result: Reduction of the energy consumption for the protection of the environment. Bad Herrenalb continuously works on its energy balance. From 2014 to 2016 the whole street lighting was switched to power-saving LED lamps. The annual energy balance as well as an energy report serves including the Co2 imprint serves a proof.
Economic success by focusing on the region
Support of the regional agriculture, by short transport routes huge amounts of energy can be saved and the local economy is strengthened. The weekly market is held on the city hall square promoting local producers ant their regional products. Also the shopping possibilities offer a variety of regional products.
Bad Herrenalb is a residential and tourism town without big industrial areas. The town consists of the urban core and the villages Bernbach, Neusatz and Rotensol. It is all about the improvement of the quality of life including the infrastructure.
A healthy eating belongs to a sustainable development especially for children. Bad Herrenalb supports parents since 2010. Children in the kindergarten as well as the school kids and students of the elementary school can decide for a tasty and wholesome lunch. Food and movement go hand in hand, therefore the kindergartens and schools offer a great variety of sport possibilities. In addition, there are many activities for every season and every sports type.
Eco-friendly Mobility and Traffic
Traffic and mobility belong to the most important municipal plannings and enclose ecological as well as economic and social subjects. Since more than 100 years Bad Herrenalb comprises of an environmentally friendly extensive railway system.
The ÖPNV operates within Bad Herrenalb, thus citizens and guests reach their destination fast and secure. And for the guests of Bad Herrenalb the motivation to use public transportation is even more attractive.
From an overnight stay in Bad Herrenalb they get the KONUS ticket to travel within the Black Forest free of charge in the 2nd class.
E- Mobility in Bad Herrenalb
Guests can rent E-Bikes at the tourist info Bad Herrenalb. In addition there are many other partners offering bikes or the possibility to charge e-bikes. Moreover there are two electric filling stations.
Sustainable Electro Mobility
E-Bikes and Pedelecs Bikes with electric motor take guests eco – friendly to all popular locations in the Black Forest. You can also take advantage to try out E-Cars in your vacation.
The Black Forest has a pioneering role within Germany. With the project “ZUMO future mobility in the holiday region Black Forest” the starting signal was given already in 2011.
The region North Black Forest offers interesting E mobile packages to you: By E-Car through the northern Black Forest and in addition still receive benefits. Book 2 days of holiday fun and driving pleasure in one.
Also for the driving experience with a high performance electric vehicle of the brand Tesla, the Black Forest offers a special experience. Under the motto “from 0 on Black Forest in 3 seconds” one-day or three-day-long guided tours can be book with up to 30 participants.
Electric mobility in the northern Black Forest is also experienceable for citizens. Electric mobility in the everyday life is offered by the municipality Oerreichenbach. There is an E-Citizen Car. This model serves as a role model for other local authority districts in the rural area. In the near future the north Black Forest should be the region of electric-mobile citizens.
Also the ÖPNV switches to E-Coaches. In Baiersbronn an electric mobile local coach was put into operation in 2015. In the meantime, several lines are operating here.
E-Filling Station Infrastructure
A filling station infrastructure is evident for electro-mobility. Internationally more and more E-stations are put in operation due to the rising acceptance. Also in the Black Forest you will find many of these filling stations. The ENCW energy Calw is engaged here and works on a steady removal of the net. At the same time E-mobility is tested for everyday suitability.
