The minimalist rooms with sea views, proximity to the beach, and healthy Mediterranean and vegetarian cuisine invite you to leave the stress of the mainland behind and just be. History

Hotel Korinjak, the first entirely vegetarian hotel on the Croatian part of the Adriatic, opened its doors in 2000 with a clear vision: to balance mental and physical recovery while preserving the island’s nature. As the only hotel on the island, it dared to take the step of fully embracing the vegetarian and holistic lifestyle.

Hotel Korinjak was opened in 2000 on the northeast coast of the Croatian island of Iž. Since then, it has consistently pursued its vision of combining mental and physical relaxation while preserving the island’s unique natural environment.

  • Hotel Korinjak is the only hotel on the island and was built in 1969 according to the regulations of that time. It was taken over by the present owners in 2000.
  • Land use is following and respecting local laws on land use and protection of local nature and culture.
  • There has been no involuntary relocation of residents, no relocation of endangered or protected species, and the impact on nature has been minimized.
  • Socialist-era architecture gradually converted and modernized to create a holistic, friendly place for guests and their pets, as well as for the local community.
  • Increasing use of renewable energy
  • Use of energy- and resource-efficient technologies such as LED lighting
  • A solar power plant provides more than 60% of the hotel’s electricity needs during the summer months and 100% the rest of the year
  • Ongoing replacement of old industrial equipment with new, more efficient equipment with higher energy efficiency ratings
  • There is no water supply on the island, neither from the mainland nor from natural sources.
  • Water is supplied by:
    • Collecting rainwater, but this is not enough, especially during the dry summer months when water demand is highest.
    • Buying water from the mainland (by boat) – a limited and expensive option, but the only one.
  • Minimizing water consumption by using brackish water from their well for the toilets (i.e. no drinking water in the toilets)
  • Water quality monitoring by local authorities
  • Regular testing of kitchen water to ensure it is demonstrably clean
  • Guests and staff are encouraged to use water wisely and consciously
  • Modern and efficient wastewater treatment plant: There is no public sewage system on the island, all wastewater is discharged into the sea 200 meters from the island’s coast.
  • The hotel has a wastewater system based on local regulations separating kitchen runoff from other wastewater.
  • Water management permit from the government agency “Croatian Waters“
  • Towels and bedclothes are not changed automatically every day (bedclothes once a week; towels at the request of the guest)
  • Toiletries in reusable packaging
  • Separation of plastic, glass, and paper waste and recycling through local waste collection
  • Waste separation and collection for staff (kitchen, bar, housekeeping, etc.) and guests (campsite, beach, etc.).
  • Waste avoidance wherever possible, e.g. by careful shopping
  • Waste disposal without negative consequences for nature and people
  • Electric composter for all food waste (cooked and raw) has reduced food waste by more than 90% and allows compost to be returned to nature.
  • Separate collection of cooking oil; a local company does collection and recycling.
  • Use of local and seasonal products during the summer months, with the motto “from field to table in one day.”
  • Avoidance of plastic when serving food
  • Use of paper plates, paper cups, straws, etc. for more than 5 years when disposable tableware is unavoidable
  • Focus on local/regional cuisine, Mediterranean vegetarian-vegan
  • Kitchen policy to minimize food waste

  • Donations to various local associations and charitable organizations for the improvement and development of local living conditions

  • No wild animals are captured, bred, or kept
  • Guests and employees are encouraged to use climate-friendly transportation and are informed about alternatives.
  • Charging facilities for e-cars and e-bikes are available and powered by renewable energy.
  • Guests are encouraged to leave their cars at home and visit the island without a car, using public transportation or exploring the island on foot or by bicycle.

  • The accommodation operates following national and international legislation.
  • Future management plan based on promoting openness, tolerance, and well-being for people and nature
  • Preference for local suppliers, especially for food, construction, and local tourist services (bike/boat rentals, etc.)
