“For us, true luxury is about protecting the environment: a luxury that helps our planet! ” Irene and Roberto Biancotti

What sustainable initiatives are being implemented at Rocche di Montexelo in Piedmont?

As active members of the local tourism association, your hosts emphasize collaboration within the region. “In small towns like Langhe and Roero, it’s easier to promote responsible tourism than in big cities,” they say. “As a close-knit community, we help one another.” Rocche di Montexelo is itself Green Key certified and implements a wide range of sustainable practices.

  • Architecture
  • Energy & Resources
  • Water Use
  • Waste Management
  • Food & Culinary
  • Social Engagement
  • Mobility
  • Environment & Nature

Preserving the origins

Rocche di Montexelo was built on the site of a dilapidated and, in some cases, even dangerous former estate. During construction, deliberate decisions were made—for example, to incorporate rainwater collection and the underground storage of hazelnut shells (for heating). At the same time, the stated goal was not simply to build something new, but to create a place to stay that combines sustainability, local traditions, and respect for the landscape.

  • Based on existing structures surrounding the property
  • Preservation of original materials wherever and whenever possible
  • Implementation of infrastructure for more sustainable operation of the facility (rainwater collection, storage capacity for hazelnut shells)
  • Preservation of the local architectural identity
  • Integration of family heirlooms and restored elements throughout the property
  • Reflection of the Roero landscape in the apartments’ interior design

Conscious and certified sustainable

The Green Key certified accommodation measures its CO2 emissions, among other things, to ensure that comfort is as climate-friendly as possible.

  • Member of the “Comunità Energetica del Roero (CER)” energy community, a network of citizens, businesses, and municipalities dedicated to generating and sharing renewable energy locally and protecting the environment.
  • Purchasing electricity from a photovoltaic system through the energy community
  • Heating the apartments with eco-friendly regional fuels (including hazelnut shell biomass)
  • No use of gas
  • Solar thermal system for heating the pool and providing hot water
  • Energy-efficient air conditioning units that automatically shut off when a window is opened
  • LED lighting throughout the building
  • Active engagement with and education of guests on responsible energy use

Conserving resources by taking responsibility

Piedmont is naturally a water-rich region: Thanks to the Alpine arc, its lakes and rivers, it has abundant water resources that even make rice cultivation (including for risotto) possible. However, due to climate change, Piedmont has also experienced droughts and water shortages. Therefore, the hosts at Rocche di Montexelo consider it important to treat water as a precious resource and to use it sparingly.

  • Rainwater harvesting system for watering green spaces and filling the pool
  • Use of rainwater for cleaning with a pressure washer
  • Toilet flushing system that uses rainwater
  • Towels changed only upon request or every three days
  • Room cleaning only upon request (otherwise after guests’ departure)
  • Active communication of these measures and guest involvement
  • Use of plant-based cleaning products

A focus on waste reduction and recycling

Even before recycling, the accommodation ensures that waste isn’t produced in the first place.

  • Waste separation according to the local municipal recycling system (paper, plastic, glass, and general waste).
  • Collection of plastic waste in personalized recycling bags with barcodes provided by the municipality annually (many villages in Langhe and Roero use this system)
  • Refillable dispensers instead of single-use items in bathrooms
  • Shopping without unnecessary packaging whenever possible
  • Use of recycled toilet paper

Enjoy local cuisine

A region’s cuisine is often one of the best ways to experience a destination. At Rocche di Montexelo, Irene and Roberto help their guests do just that by offering personal recommendations and regional products.

  • Regional products from Roero, Langhe, and northern Italy for the Italian breakfast, whenever possible
  • Prioritizing sustainably produced and organic products
  • Offering regional specialties, such as aperitifs and wines, to guests
  • Personal recommendations for restaurants, wine bars, and culinary experiences in the region

With the region, for the region

Hosts Irene and Roberto Biancotti are dedicated to collaborating with local partners to strengthen the region.

  • Family-run accommodation for a decade
  • Prioritizing local vendors and experts
  • Ongoing sustainability training and continuous improvements in collaboration with Green Key certification
  • Collaboration with local wineries, restaurants, tour guides, and artisans
  • Recommendation of local experiences instead of mass tourism
  • Equal treatment and respect for all employees
  • Information on local culture and responsible tourism is available on the website and in an information brochure in the apartments
  • Collaboration with the local tourism consortium and with Visit Piemonte

Getting around slowly and mindfully

The vacation apartments are located in the middle of the vineyards and are only easily accessible by car. However, the hosts encourage eco-friendly travel by supporting electric vehicles and car-free vacations.

  • Two charging stations for electric vehicles (for a fee), each with an output of 7.4 kW
  • Free charging for e-bikes and secure bicycle storage
  • E-bike rentals through local partners
  • Information for guests on public transportation and train stations (in the guest guide in the room and available at the front desk)
  • Information on hiking trails and e-bike routes

Vacation in a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Langhe and Roero are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Piedmont wine region. As a protected cultural landscape, this site recognizes the centuries-old, harmonious interaction between people and nature through traditional viticulture.

  • Protection of native vegetation and the cultural landscape is an integral part of the region’s sustainable, community-based tourism initiative
  • Measuring the annual reduction in environmental impact in connection with Green Key certification
  • A dedicated section on sustainability on the website
