Central America is the central region of the Americas. It extends to an area of 524,000 square kilometers, or almost 0.1 % of the Earth's surface. The population is estimated at 41,739,000. Central America consists of seven countries: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. It is bordered by Mexico to the north, the Caribbean Sea to the east, the North Pacific Ocean to the west, and Colombia to the south-east, which is also the most southern point of North America. Central America is part of the Mesoamerican Biodiversity hotspot, boasting 7% of the world's biodiversity. It has many species from the Nearctic and the Neotropic ecozones, the southern countries (Costa Rica and Panama) have more biodiversity than the northern countries (Guatemala and Belize).
In the 1980s political unrest kept most tourists away from traveling to Central America, but the reputation has changed and Central America, especially Costa Rica becomes one of the most popular regions for tourists that are traveling more consciously. If you decide to explore Mayan ruins, relax on the great beaches, go trekking in the rainforests, watch the wildlife, Central America is the traveler's unexplored dream destination.
