History & Philosophy

The latest addition to The Pavilions family, The Pavilions Himalayas, a unique organic farm boutique resort, opened in November 2015.

The land for Pavilions Himalayas – The Farm was originally selected to provide an opportunity for local farmers to re-establish organic farming and transition away from commercial agricultural production.

Green Initiatives

  • Energy
  • Regionality
  • Social Engagement
  • Water
  • Food
  • Powered exclusively by solar energy from its own solar panels
  • Reduce electricity consumption without negotiating the mod-cons expected by guests
  • Produce your own biogas for use on site
  • Nearly all buildings are constructed with local and natural materials from Nepal to avoid a negative footprint from imported items.
  • Diversified organic farming to supply the kitchens and keep imports to a minimum
  • Other products provided by local farmers
  • Biodegradable soaps and shampoos made at the resort from local herbs
  • Sustainable concept: 50% of the village community is directly employed; for all others, The Pavilions Himalayas will provide training to start their own small businesses with a micro-loan provision to supply the resort with needed products.
  • Donations to community school and health clinic
  • Own charitable work with Right4Children and The Pavilions Foundation
  • 70% of profits to be donated to social activities after loans are repaid
  • Rainwater harvesting tanks provide 50% of the resort’s water needs
  • Recycling of water through wetland planting tanks
  • Reuse of this water for toilet flushing
  • Each villa has two efficient flat-bed solar panels to heat water for most of the year.
  • Gray water from showers, sinks and bathtubs is naturally treated with bio-sand filters and plants and reused for toilet flushing and landscaping.
  • The ‘black water’ from the villas flows into a central biogas plant and, together with the cattle manure from the farm, produces methane gas. This gas flows into the main kitchen and is used as fuel to cook food for the resort.
  • To protect the wetlands and biogas system, all soaps and shampoos are biodegradable.
  • Rainwater is incorporated into the swimming pool with Himalayan salt, while a salt chlorinator is used to purify the pool water.
  • Fresh organic food is provided by the on-site farm.
  • Milk, meat, staples, fruits and vegetables are grown on the resort grounds throughout the year, and villagers are encouraged to provide local produce to support the local economy.
  • Residual manure from the biogas plant is used to fertilize the fields for food production.
