A small retreat in Monticello d'Alba, Piedmont—this is what Irene and Roberto Biancotti created through hard work, time, and attention to detail. Nestled on a gentle hill in the Roero region, the retreat features four apartments, each individually and lovingly designed. Every apartment has its own small kitchenette and plenty of privacy. The region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has been shaped by viticulture for centuries. Surrounded by vineyards, hazelnut groves, and the distinctive gorges of the Rocche del Roero, the landscape beckons you to explore it slowly and mindfully.

Rocche di Montexelo was born from the desire to create a place of tranquility, privacy, and genuine hospitality. For the past ten years, Irene and Roberto Biancotti have welcomed guests to their home in the Roero hills. The property’s exclusivity is a deliberate design feature, with only four apartments and a small spa, which is reserved entirely for one booking at a time. This creates Rocche di Montexelo’s special atmosphere, which immediately captivates guests.

The Roero region extends around Rocche di Montexelo, one of three historic wine-growing regions in the UNESCO World Heritage Site, “Wine Landscapes of Piedmont.” These three contiguous regions, Roero, Langhe, and Monferrato, are characterized by vineyards, small villages, historic wine cellars, and castles. To this day, viticulture remains an integral part of daily life in the region and defines its unique character.

A winegrowing region and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014

In 2014, the wine-growing regions of Langhe, Roero, and Monferrato were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The decisive factor was the interplay between viticulture, the cultural landscape, and traditional cultivation and winemaking knowledge, which developed over centuries.

By the way, the native grape varieties that are typically found in the region are Roero Arneis, Nebbiolo, and Barbera, which have adapted to the soils and microclimate over generations. Currently, over 250 winemakers cultivate around 1,250 hectares of DOCG vineyards in Roero. Each year, they produce about 8 million bottles of wine, more than 60% of which are exported. Since many vineyards are located on steep slopes with gradients of up to 50%, pruning and harvesting are still carried out by hand, which requires considerable effort.

The hiking trails in Roero are easy enough for beginners, with an elevation gain of about 150 meters.

If you would like to rent e-bikes during your stay, it is best to contact your accommodation in advance. Irene and Roberto will be happy to arrange for the right bikes to be delivered from a nearby rental partner. Rocche di Montexelo offers a storage area and free charging stations for the bikes.

Our Tip: Roero Bike Tour (RBT)

The Roero Bike Tour (RBT) is the region’s most famous long-distance bike route. It covers about 140 kilometers and is divided into seven stages that wind through vineyards, past castles, and through historic villages. Alternatively, you can ride just parts of the route. Our favorites:

RBT Stage 4: Pocapaglia – Monticello d’Alba (approximately 16 km) connects the impressive gorges of the Rocche with the wine-growing villages of the Roero region.
RBT Stage 5: Monticello d’Alba to Borbore (Vezza d’Alba) (approximately 18.5 kilometers) winds through the Roero hills, passing castles, vineyards, and orchards.

Your Journey to Rocche di Montexelo

Rocche di Montexelo is nestled in the rolling hills of the Roero region in southern Piedmont. Many attractions, wineries, and small towns are just a short drive away. While getting there without your own car can be difficult, getting around once you’re there is easy and highly recommended, whether by e-bike or on foot.

By train: The nearest major train station is in Alba. From there, Rocche di Montexelo is about a 20-minute taxi or rental car ride away. Alba is well connected to the Italian rail network via Turin and other cities.
By (electric-) car: Rocche di Montexelo is accessible via the A33 and A6 highways. Charging stations are available on-site at the accommodation.
By plane: The nearest airports are Turin (about a one-hour drive), Cuneo (about 45 minutes), and Milan (about two hours).

A culinary journey through Piedmont

Piedmont is one of Italy’s most diverse culinary regions. Around Rocche di Montexelo, the landscape and cuisine are shaped by vineyards, hazelnut groves, and truffle forests. Many local products are closely tied to the region’s history. Here, you’ll gain an authentic insight into the region’s culinary culture through traditional specialties and personal recommendations from your hosts.

#1 Wine

The Roero region is one of Italy’s best-known wine regions. Particularly characteristic of the region are the Roero Arneis DOCG, a fruity white wine made from the Arneis grape, and the Roero DOCG, a full-bodied red wine primarily made from Nebbiolo grapes. Both wines are based on the region’s indigenous grape varieties.

Good to know: There are also organic wines from Roero, though organic farming still accounts for only about 8.6% of the entire Piedmont region. Non-alcoholic wines and grape juice are also often available.

#2 Truffles

Alba is considered the world capital of the white truffle (Tuber magnatum Pico). From fall through winter, you can join experienced truffle hunters, or trifulaus, on a tour with their specially trained dogs.

Good to know: In Italy, pigs haven’t been used to search for truffles for many years, as they often damage the truffles and disturb the forest floor more severely. In the region’s restaurants, you can enjoy white truffles served with fresh pasta, risotto, or egg dishes. Truffle products like dried truffles, truffle salt, and truffle oil are also available for purchase as souvenirs.

#3 Hazelnuts

Hardly any other region is more closely associated with hazelnuts than Piedmont. It is home to the Tonda Gentile Trilobata, one of the world’s highest-quality hazelnut varieties. Bearing the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) “Nocciola Piemonte,” it is particularly prized by chocolatiers for its intense aroma.

Good to know: Many of the hazelnuts used in Ferrero products, for example, come from Piedmont (although the company now also sources hazelnuts from the global market). The company was founded in 1946 in Alba, Piedmont.

At Rocche di Montexelo, each day begins with a delicious breakfast (at an additional cost). In the lovingly decorated breakfast room, you will find a traditional Italian breakfast featuring Piedmontese specialties and local products, like homemade cakes, hazelnut specialties, yogurt, local cheeses, cold cuts, fresh bread, seasonal products, and fruit from the neighbours’ orchards. Irene and Roberto are on hand to offer personal recommendations for your daily dining needs. They know the region’s wineries, osterías, and wine bars, and will gladly share their favorite spots with you. If you’d prefer to end the evening in a more relaxed way, they’ll gladly bring you regional wines and aperitifs upon request.

Preserving the origins

Rocche di Montexelo was built on the site of a dilapidated and, in some cases, even dangerous former estate. During construction, deliberate decisions were made—for example, to incorporate rainwater collection and the underground storage of hazelnut shells (for heating). At the same time, the stated goal was not simply to build something new, but to create a place to stay that combines sustainability, local traditions, and respect for the landscape.

Upon prior request, Rocche di Montexelo can offer vegetarian options as well as alternatives such as soy, oat, and almond milk. However, the hosts cannot guarantee a completely vegan breakfast, as many local products and specialties contain eggs and other animal products.

Roero is worth visiting year-round. Spring and early summer are ideal for hiking and biking, while fall—with its grape harvest, truffle season, and colorful vineyards—is considered particularly atmospheric.

The city of Alba is about a 20-minute drive or a 40-minute bike ride away. It’s an ideal destination for a day trip or a restaurant visit for lunch or dinner.

Not necessarily. Many attractions in the area can be reached by bicycle or e-bike. However, since the area is characterized by rolling hills, an e-bike is usually the more comfortable choice. 😉 If you want to explore other parts of Piedmont, though, it is recommended that you rent a car, since public transportation is limited outside the larger towns. A cycling trip through Piedmont is also highly recommended!

Since there are only four apartments, the hosts set the breakfast time in consultation with the guests. They usually serve it around 9:00 a.m.
