Geographically, Turkey spans two continents, with the Asian territory Anatolia covering about 97 %, and Thrace occupying about 3% of Turkish territory. With over 7000 km of coastline, Turkey is situated between the Aegean Sea, the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea. Istanbul, a city with many millions of inhabitants, is Turkey's financial, economic and cultural center. Istanbul is situated on the Bosporus that ist the lifeline for this fantastic region. Istanbul is subdivided by the river Bosporus into an Asian and an European urban district.
In 1923, the successor state of the Ottoman Empire was founded by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Following the example of several European national states, the state was modernized and reformed by its founder. The Turkish culture melts many cultures and influences. It is sunny here almost all year round and that is why Turkey is a very popular tourist destination.
