Sustainability at Hotel Luise
Every decision at Hotel Luise is influenced by sustainability factors. Every change is aimed at improving the hotel’s own environmental, economic or social impact. Not all of these measures are visible at first glance, some not even at second or third glance. Nevertheless, Hotel Luise wants to show them and, above all, be an inspiration for others: It can be done eco-friendly, fair and economically!
How it all started
In the late 1980s, Klaus Förtsch took over the management of Hotel Luise from his parents and began to implement the green philosophy that still exists today. Founded in 1956, the Hotel became a pioneer in sustainability in tourism. Today, Ben Förtsch is the third generation to run the hotel, carrying on the green tradition with the same passion.
“Creativity is the key to long-term success, because creativity is the power to drive innovation, solve problems and find new approaches.” Ben Förtsch
Green Initiatives
The family-run hotel operates according to ecological principles, with a priority to fulfill the responsibility towards future generations. Hotel Luise has been awarded the EU Eco Label for its sustainable initiatives.

CO2 footprint
The Hotel Luise has had its CO2 footprint measured by Viabono for years. The focus has always been on reducing the calculated emissions. The unavoidable CO2 emissions are offset through a reforestation project in Panama, making the hotel one of the most climate-neutral hotels in Germany. In 2015, it was also the first hotel to be certified as climate-positive. This means that more emissions are offset than caused.
Only 10.24 kg of CO2 is generated per overnight stay, which is offset by a reforestation project in Panama. This corresponds to the excellent climate efficiency class A. By comparison, the average emission load of a 3-star hotel is 35 kg CO2 per overnight stay, which is much higher than at the Hotel Luise.
