Retreats focused on responsibility rather than self-improvement

6 a.m. morning yoga followed by a healthy breakfast, then a meditative hike with a stop for refreshments; in the afternoon, fitness, singing bowl meditation, and a cacao ceremony, before two hours of group journaling after dinner. Do relaxation retreats sometimes feel more like a to-do list to you than genuine rest?

Many retreat descriptions feature early mornings, tightly packed schedules, and one activity after another. The goal: to relax thoroughly (while changing your diet and getting exercise). However, instead of relaxation, this often creates a different kind of pressure to perform. The idea is that simply taking time off isn't enough—you also have to "make the most of it.“

But isn't there another way to approach a "retreat"?

Your break doesn't need to have a specific purpose!

Read the headline again. And again. And again.

It's precisely this small detail that we often forget in our fast-paced, performance-driven world. A break doesn't need a goal, result, "before and after," or "after this, I'll be..." It can simply be what it is: a break from everyday life during which you do whatever you want. This can also be a retreat (after all, "retreat" simply means "withdrawal"), which gently encourages you to enjoy your time off instead of imposing a fixed routine on you. A place that truly embodies this spirit is located on a small island in Croatia.

A place that asks nothing of you: Hotel Korinjak on the island of Iž

There is only one hotel on the island of Iž near Zadar. The location is correspondingly peaceful, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in island life and nature. At Hotel Korinjak, it’s not about self-improvement. It’s about presence and genuine relaxation, free from pressure and expectations. The retreats offered are intentionally designed to be quiet. The team and retreat leaders don't offer quick fixes or the perfect relaxation experience. The programs provide space for you to consciously connect with yourself and encourage you to explore what you need in the moment, rather than dictating it to you.

Our retreat recommendations:

What Makes Hotel Korinjak Special

This family-run hotel's retreats and programs are all guided by the same philosophy: small groups, vegetarian cuisine, mindful use of resources, and an environment that encourages a slower pace of life. Recognizing its great responsibility on this small island, the hotel actively promotes respectful coexistence. This includes the aforementioned mindful use of scarce resources, especially water, and exclusively serving vegetarian cuisine.

By the way, you don’t have to sign up for a structured retreat to enjoy Korinjak. As a hotel guest, you can participate in daily yoga sessions, gong sessions, or simply gaze out at the sea. Just a few days on the island can make a big difference. Or maybe it won't change a thing. Either way, it's okay!

What can we take away from Hotel Korinjak?

True relaxation doesn't come from doing more; it comes from doing less. It's an invitation, not an expectation. It's about letting time pass without feeling the need to do anything. This, too, is a form of sustainability: treating our own resources with the same care we give our travel destinations.

And now?

If there’s one thing you take away from this newsletter and apply to your daily life, it should be this: You don't have to do anything special on your vacation, retreat, or break. No specific outcome. No new goal. No "better than before." When was the last time you took time for yourself without feeling the need to accomplish something?

#sharingiscaring | Who really needs to take a break without feeling guilty? Forward this newsletter to them and remind them that time off is valuable, even if you're "doing nothing."

"Actually, I've been a fan of Anna and Yannik's blog, gruenumdiewelt.de, for quite some time now, not just recently. They write about sustainable travel. They started with their round-the-world trip, and since then, they’ve added lots of local tips and trips within Europe.
